Farmer Tom and his large family shared his 10-acre piece of land with a variety of livestock and other critters. Among them were a cow, a lamb, a pig, a dog, a rooster, a chicken and a small field mouse.
One day, for no apparent reason, the chicken killed and ate the mouse. As it was digesting the rodent, the chicken was suddenly killed by the rooster and eaten herself. Fat and happy, the rooster crossed the backyard and was suddenly pounced on by Tom's beloved sheepdog, Lucky, who had developed rabies. He mauled the rooster and ate it.
Lucky's next few hours weren't very lucky. Tom's prize pig, a full-grown sow that weighed close to 300 pounds, always had a fondness for the rooster and so killed Lucky, not just for revenge, but because he knew the farm would not be safe with a rabid dog running around. Pigs are notoriously unpicky about what they eat, so he ate Lucky's carcass.
For reasons that are actually rather complicated, the pig was later killed and eaten by the lamb, which, in a bizarre chain of events, was itself was killed and eaten by the cow. Late that afternoon, Farmer Tom beheaded the cow to feed his family and chopped up his bovine bounty into steaks. At dinner, Tom's children disagreed on the quality of the beef.
"Mine tastes like chicken," Jennifer remarked.
"Mine tastes like pork," said Xavier.
"Mine tastes like a dog," commented Sharon, the smallest of Tom's three children.
This puzzled Tom. "How do you know what a dog tastes like?" he asked.
Sharon considered this for a moment. "I don't know," she frowned. "It just does." And she was right, because what she was tasting was Lucky, the rabid sheepdog from earlier in the story!
For dessert, everyone had a slice of hot apple pie.
