will and 85 short block work for and 86 944t?

Thanks Noah, looking at the cylinders, only #1 piston has a 1 stamped on it. 2,3 and 4 has a $ sign stamped on it. blick is group 1. i didn't replace nor diod i measure the rings. i figured they were all moving smoothly up and down. engine is m44/51.

That's interesting.

So you're saying those are the pistons that were in the block & had been working well without damage previously?


The turbo pistons I just got have a $ sign.... never heard of that before. I wonder how that compares to #1 dia...

I think the $ sign is actually a K and S overlapping, signifying the brand Kolbenschmidt. I could be wrong though.

Every piston should have a number on it. At least all of mine did...

No, balance shaft covers are not interchangeable, they are mated to their engine block. The covers should actually have a number stamped on them, and somewhere on the block nearby there should be the same number stamped.

You can tell early engines a number of ways. The easiest is the location of the engine number stamp. On early engines, it's at the back of the deck surface. On later ones, it's on the exhaust side of the deck surface.

But "early" and "late" is a very blurred line. There are dozens, maybe hundreds of changes, and they happened at various times from 1982-1995, but I guess the biggest cluster of changes happened somewhere between '86-87.

The bottom line is that you can build a turbo engine using an NA shortblock, but you might have to shop around for various bits and pieces to make it work. While you're on the market for a shortblock, I'd recommend spending a little more time (and maybe money) and getting the same year NA engine, to minimize the variations, just to make your own life easier. I, for one, had fun building an '87 turbo engine on an '84 bare block, because I learned a lot, but there were many, many details to sort out.
