Default Oil Drain Plug Torque Spec

What is the torque spec for the oil drain plug?

Haynes says 44 ft/lbs, is this correct?

Thanks
Mike

Factory service manual says 43 ft/lbs. To be honest I have changed the oil on countless cars and never once checked the torque.

I remembered that I have the workshop manuals, so I double checked there, it said 36 ft/lbs, so I went with that.

Thanks

Could it be different on an n/a and a turbo? I don't see why, same block. I have the turbo volume of the manuals, and I looked in the front where there is a chart of torque specs. Weird.

Oh well, as I said previously I dont really dwell on the torque of the drain plug.

Actually, you're both right. There were some revisions to the Factory Manuals as the 944 line progressed. The initial spec was 60 Nm, but the latest iterations of the manuals (1990, 1991) called for a revised torque spec of 50 Nm for the oil drain plug.

Apparently, the original 60 Nm spec was too tight.

I just tighten it until I feel like it's not going to come loose or leak

Which is probably the same as 50 Nm, because my torque wrench clicks as soon as it begins to barely feel tight, so hand tightening should be fine and using a torque wrench a bit of overkill, but oh well...

Can't blame you Luis - if I had a torque wrench, I'd be using it to tighten everything ... maybe I should get one

get a good "click" torque wrench - I have 3/8 and 1/2" HAZET wrenches and swear by them - especially after I get to go through what dealer service dept's "forgot" to finish for PO of my cars! It's FRIGHTENING what I have found - how about a front crossmember that is FINGER TIGHT for the 4 bolts that are supposed to be 85NM (63lf) on the 968 I just bought - I know the dealer had it apart 2 months ago too!
