Question Help! Odometer stopped. No gear. What next?

The odometer in my 91 944 Turbo stopped. The speedo works fine, but the odo and trip meter are stuck.

Last time I took it apart I noticed it didn't have a gear like the speedo on my 90 S2, but it didn't look quite like the 968 setup that has a modular assembly, IIRC.

Any info on how these work?

Thanks and Happy New Year!

A year on and I still haven't gotten around to fixing this.

The S2 odo had a gear, as expected, but I couldn't find one on the 1991 951. Any ideas appreciated.

Happy New Year again!

TIA

Hi Luis, no idea but I did find that the VDO gear for a Volvo was the same as for my 1992 968, and easier to get, and cheaper. Maybe if you look up some contemporary Volvo odometer repair pics/vids you will see what you are missing. You might be completely missing a gear or it's not where you expect. IIRC the 968 is easier to service and you do not have to take the speedo needle off.

Check towards the bottom on this page:

Cheers,
-Joel.

Does this pic help?
From my 91 S2. The blue gear is new. I found there are a few different gears out there so you have to match it up with the old one to be sure.

Thanks to both!

It's been awhile since I took the speedo assembly apart, so I can't remember the innards exactly, but will refer to these photos and links when I crack it open again.

Hopefully for the last time!

Hello again,

As it turns out, my car has the "only 1991" odometer gear pod set up.

This consists of a two piece assembly -pod and gear, which sit under the odometer motor.

The problem I have now, however, is that after checking the odometer gear sites, none of the available replacements match what I found in my car, which is an odometer pod with 15 teeth and a gear crown with 20 teeth.

Where do you think I can find the correct replacement parts?

Thanks

Note the blue 20-tooth odometer gear that rides on the white plastic pod with a 15-tooth gear on the other side.

If you haven’t already give EagleDay a call, they’ve helped me in the past with some obscure parts.

The 15 tooth is not hard to find for the Volvo 240

The pair however can be had together also:

I think I have bought from this seller.

Cheaper to get both from the seller in Hungary.

Again, thanks for all the responses.

Joel, I wish I had seen your message before I contacted the last odometer gear supplier I had checked.

They replied that they had never seen this set up but could provide the part, so I ordered it at twice the cost plus monster shipping from the US, but it is what it is.

Will post back how the repair goes!

I received the odometer gear parts today and installed them.

Little did I know, however, that the speedometer needle does NOT need to come off on the 1991 version, but I did anyway and only I wish I hadn't.

The last VDO instrument cluster I repaired was on my SAAB 900, which has plastic needles. Unfortunately, when I pulled the needle off the 944 speedometer, I accidentally bent the orange needle itself pretty badly, which I forgot is soft aluminum.

If anyone have a broken speedometer or RPM counter with a good needle, I'd like to buy it.

Thanks in advance.

What should have been a relatively straightforward repair ended up dragging out more than I would have liked, but it's finally fixed and works!

The odometer gear turned out to be the "pod" type assembly, hidden behind the motor:

I managed to source a used cluster from the US on eBay and replaced the broken needle.

The amazing part was that after sitting for practically two and a half years, yesterday I simply reconnected the negative lead to the battery that had sat in the car and it fired right up!

After sitting for so long, now the car has other issues that need sorting -CV joints refresh, various leaks and a timing belt update- but it was to be expected.
