Default LHD to RHD Conversion

I'm just throwing this question out to some of you knowledgable people on the board here. Recently I've seen advertised a few LHD 944's/951's for substantially less than what it costs to buy an equivalent RHD model. eg AUD$11,500 for a 1996 951, kind of cheap.

I've heard it's not really very difficult or even time consuming to do this kind of conversion on a 911, because they were designed to be a whole world car, with most countries not requiring huge changes. I'm wondering whether the 944's fall into this boat, and if it would be a reasonable idea if a LHD model can be come across in good condition and a cheaper price.

If anyone here has done anything like this to a 944 please let me know how it went and how difficult it was and such.

Pick up the latest 911&Porsche World where they have a few articles on the subject. Not on any 944's though but maybe it'll answer some questions and give som ideas.

Lot's of people here in Sweden drive enthousiast cars with the steering wheel on the wrong side and don't have any problems with it.

Pat, a $11500 AUD 951 ($7700USD) is probably going to need some work done to it, you'll also need to factor in around $3500USD to get it to Australia and then you will have import duty/GST ($?) and Insurance ($500-800USD) in addition to the conversion parts and labour. And if your not already over here then you'll not have an opportunity to inspect & drive the car prior to purchase. I suspect that you will be better off finding a car in Australia.

Pat,

your post suggests you want to convert a LHD to RHD,
but your text doesnt suggest that.

If you want to convert LHD/RHD or RHD/LHD
Dont, you will bastardise the car and its going to be uneconomical.

You will always be able to sell an RHD or LHD.

in the UK, you can pick up a left hooker, for a lot less than an RHD, but the resale value is less, so you DONT loose anything. Of course some people who drive a lot in the continent (for some unknown reason) look specifically buy left hookers.

hope this helps
