Question Firewall Insulation Suggestions?

Hi. I have a 1978 924 n/a. My firewall has a think rubber insulation. It has been cracked and falling foward around the block for awhile now. Last night I went for a quick drive and noticed that it has melted a bit where it touched the back of the block. I need to do something about it today. Is it possible to install new insulation without pulling the engine? Are there decent aftermarket products that can be used? Is it safe to run without it ? For now im planning to cut away a squar where the most damage is but it needs to be replaced. Thanks.

I had this rubber insulation on my early '85na. When I did the engine swap in it, I removed the remaining peices, cleaned and painted the firewall a black color. The later 944's don't even come with this firewall insulation anyways. I just made sure the tunnel insulation was good, and I happened to take the frame heat shield from a '85/2 parts car and install it on my car. I've seen firewall insulation on ebay for the 944/968, never did look into it though.
