Default Piston ring stagger

I am putting new rings on. Does anyone know the recommended ring stagger on a 944. I pulled the pistons and the ring of all 4 were different
I have read for a VW the proper stagger is the oil control rings at 9:00 & 3:00 The 2 nd ring at 2:00 and the top ring at 10:00
I'm sure this will work, but just curious what the factory recommendations are???

Charlie ; there may be specks on this , but I just make sure that no 2 ring gaps line up . Never had any problems. The only thing that I have always been concerned about is the gap size .That is, that there is a gap when installed so the ring can properly compress in the bore. There is some theory about the tipping of the piston as it travels up and down in the bore with the relationship to the rod crank position in its revolution around the crank. This may be the idea behind the positioning of the rings . Still ,as I have said I have never had any problems.

This reminds me of when a guy asked "Can I bolt my wheel on in a different position so you can see my calipers?"

The rings will spin while in the motor. The point of the stagger is to try to get even wear during the initial running of the new motor. As the previous poster said, just spread the gaps out.

Darren,
I didn't realize the rings would "spin" during the use of the motor. Just shows how stupid I am, I learn something everyday. Thanks for the information.
Another thing I'm curious about is the the bottom oil rings on the piston were 3 piece and the top and bottom were staggered. The new ring is 2 piece so there is no way to stagger like the 3 piece. I guess it will work or they would not have been made that way.

No instructions with the rings? Staggered 120 degrees is standard.

There is a drawing of the oil control rings that I followed. It shows 2 type rings, a 3 piece like the old rings were, and the 2 piece like the new ones. I followed the drawing for the 2 piece ring that have. This is the first 2 piece oil control rings I have seen.

I found a drawing in a friends Haynes Manual which shows the Top (no 1) and the Middle (no 2) placed 180 degrees apart. I put oil (bottom or no 3) 90 degress or between the no 1 and no 2 rings.
