924 Turbo - oil in inlet
Hi
I have a 924 Turbo which was blowing oily smoke. Investigation suggested it was coming from the turbocharger so that was sent off to be reconditioned. On refitting, it still smoked so we took the turbo off again and returned it for checking. It was claimed to be OK so we fitted it back and still the problem persists. There is oil between the turbocharger and the inlet but nowhere else. All the evidence suggests it is the turbocharger, as we've pretty much eliminated everything else.
Any suggestions as we're puzzled!
Cheers
Phil

Well my S1 isnt smoking but there is also oil in the intake tract..thats quite normal to a certain degree.
It may be that your smoking occurs because of a different cause.
Valve guide seals ok?

Thanks, guys.
We're talking a lot oil in the tract. The top end has been rebuilt with new valves and guides, and the compression is good.
Everything points towards the turbocharger. The company that rebuilt it (twice) is well respected and claims they've pressure tested for cracks etc. That's why we're wondering if there's anything else that we've missed.
Next step could be to whip a turbo off another spare car we have here, but it's a lot of work just to prove or disprove a point :-)
Cheers

I was going to suggest thaat you try a different turbo or a different company to rebuild it.
Maybe they missed a seal in the turbo?
Whats the pressure they test for the oil?

Not sure what pressure they test. We did wonder if there's a hairline fracture which only causes a problem when the metal is hot - a bench pressure test may not pick up on this. The company does turbos for the local Porsche Centre, so they should know what they're doing (I hope!)
