Odometer from hell!

Odometer from hell!
Hey Troops!
I have an odometer from hell on my '84 944..... I did the repair outlined on Clarks.... And it worked for awhile.... Now the odometer /trip does not run at all.... And the speedo works fine..... But the annoying part.... After pulling it out of the car and "bench testing" the speedo with a power drill, the odo seems to work fine... But the speedo does not.....
My car is nothing fancy.... Really just a parts car.... Saved from an early grave, after sitting for 7-8 years. I do like to have the ability to reset the Odo at fill ups.... And like to keep track of mileage for oil changes.....
Thinking about getting one off eBay, but there is no guarantee it will work any better then the one I have now!
Anyone have any ideas?

Yeah.... Thought that.... But the speedo works fine when installed.....
Just the odometer and trip won't work.... But they do when I pull it and do the drill trick! Thinking it Must be haunted!

Rhe shaft the odo gear sits on has lateral movement. The gear can be perfectly good, but the entire shaft move out of position. My odo/trip meter stop working when it's too hot. Things cool off and they run again.

The speedo on these early cars, is run by the hard cable to the front drivers Side wheel, right?
I assumed as much..... That the speedo was mechanical, but is it possible it only runs the odometer??? Naaaaa, Dr. Porsche wouldn't do that to me...... Would he?

Amazingly, most speedo cables run just the odometer. The needle in the speedo is actuated by a magnet glued to a rotating disc that pulls the needle over. A spring around the speed gauge portion pulls the needle down to zero when you stop, and the cable quits turning. There is not a mechanical link up between the needle and the cable...However, Porsche's may be slightly different. FWIW
