Default Idle has life of its own!!! HELP

hi,

I was driving my car (87 N/A) in traffic today for about 45 minutes, just stop and go. About half way through, my idle started sticking at like 1800rpm. Strange. Then, a couple minutes later, it just started pulsing from 1100 to 1800 all on its own. Now that I'm home, all of a sudden it's idleing at about 1100rpm and sticking there. What the hell. It has always run great, idle has always been at like 800rpm. What could be wrong.

Can someone please help? I need ideas.

Thanks

CR

Sometimes mine will stick at 13-1400 RPMS and shoot up close to 3000 Rpms. If I open up the hood while its doing that and pull back on the throttle cam, it goes back down. Dunno what's causing it but do you have the same thing?

My guesses would be:

1)Vaccuum leak
2)Throttle Position Switch.

yeah min is idling "normal" at 1400 then when it is warmed up it goes to 1800 and stays there most of the time but when the fan kicks on it goes back down to 1400 when it is cold out, and the car warms up, it will drop down to 500 and keep going from 1200 to 500 and back and forth and then finally will sometimes rise slowly back to 1800. or sometimes it will just jump to 1800 after bouncing for a little while

Thanks for quick replies guys,

brrt50cal: i opened the hood and the throttle cam is in its usual position, doesn't move at all and the idle still jumps and sticks where it wants to.

iloveporsches: how do i check the throttle position switch? I've been searching and am I right that it is supposed to click or something like that?

thanks again,

CR

When the throttle cam returns to normal (no pressure on the gas pedal) it will click. It's pretty easy to hear.

I vote idle stabilizer...

Jumper B&C in the test port IIRC and see if your idle stabilizes...

If so, you've just found your problem...(the stabilizer)

adrial, (or anyone else),

Where is the idle stabilizer? Is this the thing under the intake manifold? Can I test it without removing the intake manifold?

Thanks,

on 85.5 and above cars you have to remove the intake
manifold to get to it. its right there once you take it off
there is NO way to get to it without removing the intake
(it sucks i know)
