Mercedes-Benz 300E
Does anyone know anything about the MB 300E's? I was looking at buying one for a winter car and basic all around driver. I heard these things are super reliable and very cheap to purchase (less than 5k for 90-92). I'm going to look at one next thursday, a 1991 300E, 125k on the clock, and the owner wants 4k for it. Any thoughts or suggestions on the cars?

300 series
I just retired my 89 300te wagon with 487 k on it. Oil pump failed and she spun a bearing. Nothing more than replacing a burnt valve at 200k and regular maint, oil changes at 7k. They are super reliable cars (at least mine was). I would stay away from the earlier 4 matics as they were prone to tranny problems.

My mother owns a 92 300E which I have gotten to drive on occasion and so far it has been great. Drives well and so far absolutly no maintenence problems. Also definatly has that "german" feel to it.

Avoid the early 4Matic. They are often reffered to as the $Matic because of the tranny/differential problems releted to them. Go and look at the tech forum at www.merdecesshop.com for more info. The MBWorld forums suck, especially for older cars. The basic non-4matic 300E is a very solid, reliable car. Some common problems include the AC evaporator and leaking gaskets, but overall they are very dependable and would make a great second car, or even a daily driver for that matter.

I have a friend that bought a '92 4matic 300E. He has dumped alot of money into that tranny and it still gives him problems. On a positive note, I just returned my parents '85 380SE after driving it for a month. 198K and still strong; int and ext are in excellent shape. Very comfortable car. I'll never own one, cause its not my character, but when I marry, you can bet I'll buy my wife the best.
