Unhappy Here's that picture of the bad pinion starter gear

OK. Here it is. I finally got a picture of the pinion. I've called a couple of local starter rebuild shops just trying to get the pinion alone- no luck yet. The starter was rebuilt a year and a half ago. It's got a new solenoid. I really don't want to pay for another rebuild when all it really needs is a pinion gear.

Is this gear available by itself?

I have the same problem with one of my cars with a bad flywheel ring gear. You may want to change the ring gear or it may happen again. If the starter has only been in there for one year with the amount of crud on it, you may have a worn clutch rubber.

Yes, it is. The problem is our cars are about the only ones that have that pinion that spins in reverse of every other Bosch starter in that model. Due to rear transaxle, we are the exception, what else is new?

Your local shops probably can't get it and add in a big $ markup but it is around.

With any luck, I'll get the engine pulled over the next couple of days. work has kept me out of town. I've got a leaking main seal. So, I'm pulling the whole engine to do all the work at once. The clutch and ring gear are coming off to get to the seal. Hopefully, it's not as bad as it's starting to shape up.

Frank,

I'm going to hold-off on amassing replacement parts until I get the engine out and torn down. I need to see just how many items need attention.

There is a new rennlist member "dmsog", that owns his own starter/alternator service shop.

Doug (aka "dmsog") sold me a brush assembly with brushes, as well as those hard-to-find rubber bushings. (Iceshark, remember a while back I was looking for these and we exchanged posts about it?) Very fair price, and good communication. He didn't mind ordering just parts for me. He also was willing to share information and advice. He will also be getting into get into the SR39X (our BOSCH starter) rebuild business once he builds up a small inventory.

Here is his contact information and other facts that he said I could share with the group.

I have been meaning to write an official post introducing him to the group, but Terry's issue came up first.

Hope this helps!

Would be worth checking the local junk yards for a used starter. Try them all not just the German car ones.

I know that the ring gear is different on the 951. Is the starter the same?

Here's the ring gear. I'll have to pull the crank through or wait until I get the bell housing apart. I think that there's a spot that is more worn than here. Someone told me in an earlier post that the engine usually stops in the same place for the most part. I expect that spot to be more worn.
