I don't think they look horrible on a red car.
When I bought my car, it came with one that says "994". If I had my choice, I wouldn't put one on the car, but I'm pretty much stuck with mine. If you do it, make sure that you REALLY like the style, cause it's next to impossible to reverse.
I don't think it looks dated, considering the car was made in the 80's. My problem is the fact that it's no longer the original look.

Here's a shot of my rear reflector lens:
Besides, the licence plate doesn't look that much better in it's original location: kinda looks like it is to tall for the spot.
Just my $0.42,

My Turbo came with it, and I'm not sure if like it or not. My car is black. Here's my thoughts though, I live where the winter fog is just plain brutal. The stock 944 lights aren't much of a deterrant to a nasty rear ender. My center light section is plain and I think it looks OK on a black car without any letters. There's already enough writing on the back. My son wants it for his 83. I think a formed black plexiglass filler in there instead would be look great. Insert laugh track!

Well, it seems the general concensus is that most people hate them, but I think they look cool and would like one. Anyone know where i can get one, new, used, whatever?

I beleive SHAUN (mideast mafia) was making replacement panels (body colored) to fill the gap between the lights. He did it to his black 944 and it looked quite good. You should be able to easily mount your license plate to it as well. 2tight that might be what you are looking for.
I'm not sure if he's still making them now that he's gone to the dark side.
Regarding the light panels. When I first saw a 944 waaaay back, it had that on the back of it. I thought it was stock. Both of my 944's came with it and i like the look. I darkened mine up a bit when I painted my tailights, I think they look fine either way - personal preference kinda thing.

I thought we've had this discussion before! IMHO, the plastic, dealer installed, USA spec-inspired, aftermarket contraption should go the way of th' rubish bin.. Taking it off leaves a lot of holes though.... Cheeseball excuse for small license plates.

I have actually seen a post on www.club944.net mocking these USA spec accoutrements. they were in the same category as cupholders, sheepskin seat covers, and those awful color coded BBS wheels. pity there was an American plate visible in the image. ahem, <sniff...> oh well, chacun a son gout.
