944 NA gas mileage
Guys,
I am daily driving my 84 944. I had not done so before and am looking for some common gas mileages.
I have been getting 24-25 MPG over 3 tank fulls
That equates to 330 miles or so before I get the light in my early 17 gal tank. I typically put 13-14 gallons in the car.
My route is 20 miles to work. mostly freeway, but about 10 miles of slow & go traffic.
My gas mileage gauge reads just about 28-30 during 70 mph cruising in 5th gear. Typical Idle reading is 40 with no A/C and just over 30 with A/C. (yes I am still using A/C as it is still 100F+ on the drive home
Using 87 Oct Gas.
Is this about right for a 74k car or a few mpg low. If low what should I check. O2? FPR & FPD?
(No chip & engine, intake & exhaust are stock)
Tires are 205/55 R16 front and 225/50 R16 Rear

Your best mileage will be strictly highway driving with no stops and slow downs. On the interstate, my 951 gets 29 at 70mph with the a/c running. So it doesn't sound like you're too far off. It also depends on how hard you get on the throttle in the slow stuff.

M, you're on par with my 84, i get around 26 with 93, about 30 with 100LL (means my O2 is still good ), and looks like i'm getting in between there with 87 octane (because its meant to run on that i guess??? ) She's got almost 90K on her now, holding up well!

mpg
on mine im talking 70-85 mph, no stops, cruise in 5th gear all the way, 91 octane gas...gets a little less with ac on ofcourse....this is checked by completely filling the tank at the start and destination not relying on gas gauge or anything like that...should be reliable...seems odd that id get that much better mileage when the only diff is higher octane fuel.....one day i put in only 4 1/2 gallons after driving 96 miles to an autocross, racing there all day (4 two minute runs--not much time but still hard core high rpm driving) and then drove half way back home...before putting in the 4 1/2 gallons....BTW that 96 mile trip: 40 miles of it is through a huge canyon goin 80-95 (according to my speedometer..never thought but, that could be off)....

fabrotz,
I also think mine is a little low. That is why I wanted to ask around.
If can get a bump up by replacing some older parts then I'd do it.
I am not unhappy with the current mileage, but like to be sure the car is running in top notch shape.

Mileage on my 83 with 202K hasn't been too good lately, either. Let us know what you find to improve it. Of course I do 90 mph runs every day, which surely don't help! FWIW, the injectors were replaced on my car a few years back with new ones when the originals began leaking. Any other ideas?

I get around 23mpg consistently during 85% city driving with my '89. I never really go anywhere with only highway driving, but I'm planning a road trip about 1200 miles next week!! This is great news that I may be able to achieve upper 20's. (long haul for a 23-year-old car, I know...pray for me)

Old thread bump, haha.
Usually driving city 95% of the time and highway 5% I get 19-20.
Most recently, due to a long highway drive during the tank, I got 24
Driving through the mountains from az into nm at 85 mph I got 30+!

Drifting
I drove mine from Santa Fe with a huge mouse nest in the air cleaner (po said he had changed it with the oil change). I cruised at around 70 to 75 and got 30 mpg. Since then I've fixed all vacuum leaks, new belts, injectors ignition, fuel and air filter and even though it still stumbles on heavy acceleration, it get a bit over 30 in same conditions. Since I'm involved in fixing up step daughter's Maxima and going to 3 weeks of flight school, I haven't turned a wrench other than retensioning the new belts and replacing a balance shaft housing O ring that was leaking, I haven't had a chance to see the new mileage figures.
