I've heard 4-5 years max. I did mine after 3.5 years/8500 miles just to be safe and have no regrets. IIRC, factory spec is re-tension after the first 2500 miles, again at 15k, again at 30k and replace at 45k. Most of us replace the at 30k to be on the safe side. A visual inspection is a waste of time, a bad belt can look new with no sign of wear or dry rot and still snap. If you don't KNOW when the belts were done, DO THEM NOW!!! Putting them off is an economic policy that only w could make sense of.

Good advice,if you dont know when belt were done,,DO IT NOW. Also do the waterpump, thermostat, rollers and seals. If the belt breaks you can kiss you motor goodby! The latest porsche recommendations, Replace ,retension At 1500 miles, then check tension At 15 k and 30 k replace at 45 k.Then repeat.

The belts can also break due to age.Not driving these cars is bad for them, low miles are nice but seals leak and rubber rots from non use.

Find a good independant mech, contact PCA and see who does tech inspections and see who they use.Look around you can find a good mech, ask here at rennlist.

Or you can check out www.944racing.com. Paragon is great too, always had A-1 service! I will be doing my belts, seals, rollers, and H2O pump on the 84' due to miles, and belts on a turbo car I just bought due to age (Engine totally rebuilt in 1997, and now has only 2k since engine rebuild)
Best of luck!

Noblesville here. Maybe some of us can get together sometimes for the harder do-it-yourself jobs. I think clutch work is coming soon for me and I don't know when my belt and pump has been changed, if ever, so I'd like to tackle that also.

I was in Sheridan a few days ago and someone has an 86 951 for sell for $5500. I didn't get the milage, but it was in very good shape. So, for anyone near here, you might be able to talk yourself into a good deal on a nice car. Unfortunately I didn't have time to stop and talk to them and their # wasn't posted on the sign, but I did give it a quick look-see.

I'm reupholstering my seats right now by hand. It's going to end up costing me about $30 total and about 15 hours of work because I'm sewing them by hand. I have all seats done but the drivers and they look pretty good, but not professional.

I'd really like to find the seat and top for the driver's side. Not the seat itself or the foam, etc, just the cover in black pleather. Mines worn and torn. Anybody have a source for this?

Ok, like i said, i dont know exacly when the belt was changed but the guy had the car sitting for a couple months and then started it up and all the seals where shot, he took it in to a porsche dealer and they had it for 2 weeks and charged him almost 3K. I called another Porsche dealer and told them about the seals and the price and they said that they do the same thing for almost the same price and changing the timing belt always includes in that job.

Any instructions on how to do all these things yourself?
Anyone know of a link where I can see how to tackle all these jobs (seals, belt, pump, etc.)??
Is the Haynes manual any good?
Thanks

I went by the Haynes manual and was fine. The few questions that I had were answered by the know-it-alls of Rennlist. You can also check out www.clarks-garage.com
