Regardless of the size of the tank, I average 28-30 mpg. I averaged that on my '85 944, too.

While we're on the subject of tanks, does the larger tank retrofit to an earlier car? When my '84 was my daily driver, it was a PITA filling it up every three days. I even thought about adding a Fargo-type tank in the rear hatch area just to avoid being on empty and late for work.

Not sure if newer tanks would retrofit- I'm sure you could find a fuel cell though- not sure if that would be tough or not, but, you could surely find one w/at least 25G, probably even 30G- I HATE small tanks- my 1st Gen Integra had a 13.2G tank & that sucked! Many of the newer cars I like seem to have small-*** tnaks- I want at least 20, so am thankful my 951 is above that- I think somewhere in there would be counter productive as you'd be carrying so much weight, at least right after fill-up, unless you just drive an obscewne amount of miles- I'd like 25G even I think- I remember an M6 vs the 928S4 test- the M6 had a tiny little tank & got horrible mileage- it's total range was something like ~160miles(!)... That woul SUCK!

Well the plastic tank might fit, but I thing it will be a royal pain. It might be even harder if a few of the brackets are not there for it in the early chassis.

Fuel cell a just plain expensive. $2000 for anything that fits in the stock location.

Hmmm- $2000? I REALLY think the 21.1G size is just PERFECT! Of course, this doesn't help those w/early tanks- hope it works if any of you try it...

Anyone know how much these tanks weigh? Do fuel cells save weight at all? I mean, it's at the wrong end of the car & not worth the $ IMO (for street) but just curious...

I remember the $2000 number from an ad I saw in the back of Pano. Not even sure what the fuel capacity was. I doubt a fuel cell is lighter, but it should be safer in crash. That said most race 944's run with stock tanks. While always recommended by club racing orgs few require them. It think POC does for their fastest classes however and SCCA requires them for their "Production" and GT classes.
