James,

Defensive weapon of choice is Beltronics Pro300.

Good to know where the California Highway Patrol is!!

Agree that Laser (Lidar) and Instant On is tough to detect IF you are solitary vehicle, but it alerts when others are getting hit. But live with it enough and eventually you learn to predict where LEO will use it.

I have been using detectors for about 40 years, when they really weren't all that great. But I have saved enough in tickets to pay for them several times over.

I have an Escort in the Cayman, and it has saved me tickets on multiple occasions. There's nothing much to do when solitary other than keep it within reasonable limits, but in traffic, the Escort hasn't let me down. It's a bit of a pain in Chicagoland because of all the construction zone radar signs and the EZPass / IPass transponders. But on the open highway it's been great for me.

One thing that nobody has mentioned yet, is the value behind a discreet remote mount setup. When you get pulled over (and you will at some point, detector or not), you are far less likely to talk your way down/out of the ticket if the LEO sees a detector in the windshield. They tend to equate detectors as premeditated intent to break the law or drive recklessly.

That being said, this thread reminds me that I need to stick the RX75 in the 944. They wont save you completely, but they do help level the playing field when it comes to enforcement of the speed tax.

V1 + Waze

In addition you need to be a good salesman if you do get pulled over as I have talked my way out of many tickets

This is a fact for sure. I got pulled over for doing 80 in a 65 going with the flow of traffic. Of course I stood out so I got pulled over. First words from the d$ck, I mean LEO, was he looks at my windshiled mount RD and says " hows that radar detector working?". I replied "apparently not that good". Got a ticket but fought it and it got dismissed. LEO got hurt on the job and couldn't make the court date. Score one for the good guys.

I just unplug it and throw it under the seat or into the passenger footwell if I get pulled over. Which has happened only once since I got it, and that was only because I overtook a cop. He didn't have his radar on lol.

I thought of it afterwards. I actually was stunned I was being pulled over. Literally I thought it was going to be for tinted windows or no front plate. I was in the fast lane following a Honda Odyssey.

Be careful with that practice. If an officer notices you stashing something during a traffic stop, your problems could extend far beyond a simple traffic ticket.

Haha that's a good point. I would typically do that if I think I can do it discreetly when I see lights behind me in the distance.

A little more development and this could be the best solution.

then we get into laser jammers and stuff.
A used v1 ($250) and that app have served me well, the V1 is worth it. The nicer GPS using escorts are really nice too. They require a BT connection to your phone and a yearly Sub for the GPS/reporting functionality to work though.

I love my Escort 9500iX. It has paid for itself many times over.

Don't underestimate the value of GPS. The 9500iX tells you where known speed traps are located and in Arizona we have some rural speed cameras that use sensors in the road surface(no radar) to record your speed for the camera. Every one of those is recorded in the 9500iX database so I get a warning before I get to those cameras. A regular radar detector won't help you avoid a ticket from those cameras.

I use the Beltronics RX 65 I bought a bunch of years ago + wake. Between the two it works pretty well. I like the mode that shows all 3 bands of radar as some are mote likely to be the fuzz and other more likely to be false alarms.

I am not sure what the new model of the RX 65 is today but if I remember correctly Beltronics make the insides for the escorts.

actually i have been pulled over with my radar detector not going off. He knew he didnt get a bead on my speed and i knew it. (left the detector visible) he just got me for illegal lane change because he had no speed proof and i didnt incriminate myself by answering the "how fast do you think you were going"

At that time i had a Beltronic 955. good detector but i upgraded to a V1 and i have a beltronic RX65 in a case when i need to switch cars. Also had an escourt 8500 but i decided to return it and get a V1 in its place.
