I wanted a 944 when I was 16 but didn't know it then. Well, the 944 hadn't even been thought of in 1965. Still I knew that I wanted a road car.

I did a lot of VW Buggin' so I knew by the age of 21 what a tail heavy drift was. Could not justify the cost of a 911 if a Bug was just as fast but a lot cheaper. Liked the wife's Karman Giha but it was just a low slung VW.

Wasn't till I drove a 924 in 1977 that I wet my pants! Bought two over the next two years. The first was stolen on a business trip in 1979. Had to give up the second in 1982 so I bought a VW Bug! Then a used 1977 Honda Accord that needed an engine. Finally in late 1985 I had saved enough to buy a used 83 944 with 45k miles.

That was 18 years ago. Still drive the 83 every day. Yes it's on the second engine. Yes I've been through two clutches. Yes I've broken the timing belt twice (don't ask!). Yes I got married again.

So since you admit to having the bug for the 944 you came to the right forum. We all have the bug!

I'm in South Jersey, Medford area. Thanks for the offer, but unfortunately I don't really have all my funds together now, at least not enough to go out and buy something....I appreciate it though.

Damn, I just realized something pretty important...the 944 has no airbag. I don't know how I overlooked this, but this is sure gonna make me think a little harder about it...

Porsche's are not cheap cars, they are dream cars. The 944 is one of the finest minor road all season cars anyone has ever made. But, my advice is: don't go near one without US$6000. If you pay less, it will need more repairs the first year.

Wow, that is a lot of money. I paid 3500 for an 1984 in very good condition. Not mint, but that's not what I was after. 6000 would probably buy me a mint one of these wonderful little things.

I bought my 1986 n/a for $1500 dollars after talking to the guy at the car lot for 6 months. It started out at $4000 but it was there a long time and then the clutch went out on a test drive by some teens. I kept offering $1500 and they finally took it. I did the clutch myself and also did the plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor , fuel filter and some cosmetic stuff . The clutch sure wasn't easy but any semi- mechanical person can do it. I also replaced the tires , I'm a service manager at a auto service center so I got some good deals, but the net is a great place to find deals. And I love these cars , next I'm getting a 951. You can have those rice cars ( they are good family cars ) John
