I have a 86 951 running Moble 1 15W50 here in the Dallas area. In the last week it has been down in the high 50s and low 60s in the morning. This is the first fall that I have owned the car. When I start the car I have about .5 to 1 bar oil pressure. This goes on for about 2 agonizing minutes before the pressure jumps up to 5 bar. Anyone ever had this problem?? And what did you do?
Thanks
Thanks

Hi Super Dave,
It sounds like you need to get to know your OPRV (oil pressure relief valve) a little better.
This can get stuck and cause all sorts of trouble.
I am sure many others wil pitch in on this thread, but thats where I would start.
Good luck,
Regards,
John

Dave, you need to replace the rubber o-ring on the oprv, do a search with my user name and oprv. You will find some good diagrams. Also look at the Parts and technical refernce manul from 1999 specifically at tech bulliten # 3 page 99 I think.
OPRV is located below and behind the oil filter, it looks like and is a 24mm bolt. Disconnect the wires to the pressure sender, dont worry about removeing the fender liner as it will not give you more room.
What are you doing on Saturday? This sat, look under Central Region Forum "Central Texas Fun Run" I'd be great to have another

Thanks for the other thread Kevin. So your saying the O ring and the seal is what I need to replace? I am glad because of the price for the platinum OPRV$$$$$.
I really did not see or understand from where the Fun Run is starting.
Please let me know. I am going to get the seal and O ring in a couple of hours get home let it cool and throw the thing on today.

Kevin
Did you mean to remove the oil pressure sending unit whan you said remove the wires? Is the OPVR behind it? Does the sending unit screw into the OPVR?
I looked and looked for the OPRV and could not find it. I removed some cap with a nut that had a spring inside it and a sorta piston like thing on the other end of the spring. The PET sucks bad in helping me figure out where the OPRV is.

That is the oprv. Sounds like you have an old 3 piece unit. You probably dont want to hear this, but now is the time to update it to a new one piece. $309 with tax from BAP/GEON. I think you have that chain in Dallas. That should solve your problem. Sorry for the $$$ news.
You can try to make the older type work. Some other people have tried to lightly sand the piston to allow it to travel better. They do have a tendency to "stick" this could also be the cause of your oil pressure delay. However, the factory manadated updates after 1986. IIRC the part # for the one piece for 86 models is 944 107 035 11 but check the Parts and Technical Reference Manual 1999 edition bulliten #3 it is toward the back. Your local Porsche dealers parts dept should have this publication.

I suggest you search the board for OPRV, since we have had this topic up a lot in the last 6 month.
I myself, and ahofam123, had OPRV problems, along with others. I solved mine at "no cost" but sanding. And it now seems like ahofam123 did it to, so now you can try it, before spending $300 on something not needed.

Hi Super Dave,
You really wont find better advice about OPRV's than here with these guy's,
944ZEN,Kevin Baker, ahofam123, Peckester,,,,, but to mention a few.....
This seems to be a real problem for the 944 and its so important to get it right first time.
I hope you have now got your problem solved ,,,if not,,, just keep asking dude. !!
regards,
John
