Default Adding 951 Oil Cooler to an 87 NA

Just wanted to clear up a few things before installing my 951 oil cooler setup on our 87-ish 944 race car.

I bought a complete 951 setup from a member on the forum here and am ready to install.

Being that the engine is from an 87, I assume (I will obviously find out when I take it apart) that I have the later OPRV, which should transfer over to the new housing, correct?

So I need the housing gasket (944-107-147-03-M17), obviously. $10

It also looks like I need the o-ring for the OPRV (999-707-144-40-M100).

There is a larger gasket set ($35) for the NA that looks like it has seals for the oil/water cooler, and I'm assuming I don't need anything in that more expanded kit, correct?

The person that sold me the kit suggested I also get a new sleeve for the OPRV, part number 944-101-181-01-OEM - $10. I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere but for $10 I will replace it just in case.

Any other o-ring or gasket I'm missing?

Last thing - since its a race car, we have no power steering, but there is a bracket in the area. I'm debating if I should try to replace the setup without removing the headers. Some say it is possible, others say its not worth it and to just replace the headers. Part of me wants to deal with the rusted header studs now knowing that if I have to pull the head for an emergency head gasket during a race that everything is fresh. The other part of me wants to leave well enough alone if I can swap the oil cooler without messing anything else up.

I'm overdue for a write-up on our team's 14 hours at Daytona with our 944. We finished 39th of 130 cars and took the checkered flag with no mechanical issues other than running a bit warmer than I feel comfortable with.

You're missing one critical item - 951 107 152 03, which is a small aluminum sleeve or tube which connects the 951 oil filter housing to the engine block, where the nipple on the 944 oil cooler element use to go.

That sleeve also needs two of these orings - 999 707 043 40.

Yep, everything you have should bolt right up. The 951 housing kit should have come with the tube, but you will need that and fresh seals for it like FRporscheman said. Where are you going to mount the cooler?

No, that part is the guide sleeve for the OPRV, and looks like this:

That's the part you need. When the last digit is off, it just means it's a newer version or different supplier or something.

Be careful if you find a used one - they usually get damaged upon removal because people try pulling from the lip at the end, which bends or cracks them.
