yup thats right. i replaced my engine myself, done all the work myself, every last bit of it. so my brakes were ticking, and it was raining (my garage is occupied by jaibeibers car getting a new engine), so i decided to have the rotor turned at the local shop. Well, he takes it, and an hour later tells me the rotor is craked, no biggy, just buy a new rotor and replace it myself. well, it took him 1 HOUR of non-stop labor to tell me my rotor was cracked. and i even told him which one was making the noise. so 70 dollars later, i got nothing but confirmation that my brakes need to be fixed.
my complained is not the fact that they charge 70 dollars an hour for labor (which i might add is very steep), but the fact that it took the mechanic a whole hour to remove 5 lugs, remove wheel, remove two 17mm bolts pull off caliper, remove screw(s) on rotor, and pull it off. the nascar guys can do this in like less then a minute. i can do it in less then 5 for sure, and now i'm kicking myself for not doing it myself.
i guess once in a while you need to have a situation that reinforces the fact that do it yourself is ALWAYS the way to go, even if you get wet in the rain.
rant mode off.

Most shops also have a minimum charge. If it's a good shop, it'll be 30 minutes, if it's a run of the mill place you'll be looking at the full hours charge.
Sounds well within the norm by my experiences.

The Porsche dealer in San Antonio was at 105/hr last I checked. I want to open up shop where you guys are. Never in all the time I ran a shop did I charege someone to look at their brakes. Hell, I would have only charged you .5 to put the rotor on. I love how one person gets it given to them and everyone chimes in about how, my guy takes care of me, he would have only charged 35 dollars to look at it. Especially, in a case like this where basically anyone in any chain would have looked at them for free. You dont need a german mechanic to check your brakes, especially if you already know there is a problem.

In San Antonio, I always took my car to Jones Autowerks for anything I felt I didn't have time/know-how to accomplish. They are a nice group of people and always fair-priced. I will be driving down as soon as I find a replacement fuel pump (88 944S), I've gotta take the car back to Loredo Paint and Body to have the entire thing reworked (paint is chipping off where they masked....shoddy work). It looks like they will hopefully be honoring their 5yr warranty.

Kinda - there are about 20 Firestone stores in Nashville. That is the best district in the country. If they can figure out how to check the brakes you let me know and I will find you a place that can. Hell, if one of them tells you they cant check the brakes I will call the Company President.
Robert - there are a number of places in Austin to have the work done.
