Peter - part of the problem with most shops is they dont know where to get the parts. So they end up buying from the dealer for 200% mark up and then mark it up further.
I like to think NO customer ever left my shop unhappy but I KNOW that is not true. I can say that I bet that number of (those who were unhappy) people is REALLY REALLY small. Not all of us are crooks.

I will recommend a shop highly, If you wanna travel to Central Illinois.
Fast diagnosis, 1/2 hour rates @ 65 an hour and 944 parts IN STOCK.

the funny thing is, the place i took my car to, was a tire/brakes/suspension shop. they are not porsche certified, but they have done the tires and given my car an alignment, so i know they can work on it (and actually it is the place that the porsche certified shop around here sends customers for alignments). so i was surprised by the 70 dollars an hour. do you think they would have charged that it it was a ford? what do they charge for domestics usually?
i would be interested to see if the going rate for a given mechanic changes depending on manufacturer of the car.

heck, i don't think there's anyone around here that even works on p's. this sorta terrifies me, in the event of an emergency i don't know where to go. i am def down with doing everything myself, at least i know nothing else has been messed up.

Ford dealers dont have a flat rate. The use a labor matrix, unless they are independant. It actually works fairly well, you pay less dollars for heavy work, as it is going to take more hours and more for light work. I.e. 20hr engine R&I doesnt run 85/hr where a radiator install might run 90/hr.
