Is the red on all the 944/951s the same exact color? Was there any variation?

Guards Red is the most common I believe. There are other shades though like India Red. I don't know all the variations off hand

Gaurds Red is only referred to in that color in 1983. It is called India Red through MY89 and Indian Red in MY90+ The paint code is LM3A. Red paint is very suseptible to discoloration so often times they appear to be different colors. This had been noted before by people when they say Guards Red is different from India Red, usually it can be attributed to paint deterioration. Somewhere recently I sited the pages from the FSM's but I am too lazy to look again.

Guards and India Red are indeed the same, but the India red name was around in the late 70's (Porsche India Red was a very popular shade in Hot Rod Magazine when I started to read it in '76-'77, and I almost had a VW painted that color in '82 or '83).
I have an '86 944 brochure that has the paint and interior samples, it shows Guards Red. I scaned it and posted it a year or so ago when this question came up. I have heard that other sources list India Red for the same year.
