Default What is this?

I found a plug that looks very unhealthy, so I was wondering if anyone could identify it for me. Here's a picture (click on it for a larger version):

Recently the idle has been wacky when i initially start the car, and today I felt some lack of power and surges when trying to accelerate. Do you guys think this could be the cause?

It's the S2, btw.

Yeah, that's the power steering reservoir at the bottom of the picture, and the distributor at the top-right. Now I'm thinking it's the hall sender cable, which would explain the erratic running problems, right?

I think that is the plug for the Hall sender on your S2. This would explain the erratic running as this and the speed sensor on the bell housing are used by the DME.

Riff is right. This is a hall sender connection which helps the dme determine which cylinder is detonating. So in turn, it knows which clyinder to retard. If it's not working or shorted out the dme could possibly retard ignition on all cylinders.
