Default OT: '90 VW Jetta brake pad replacement?

Sorry for the OT post, but I need a response, and this is car related.

How hard is it to change the front brake pads of a VW Jetta III? I've changed all the pads on my 944S2 recently, and surely the VW can't be more difficult, but I can't find a write up on the process anywhere.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi Luis-

Not very hard at all, but more difficult than the S2/951. I would look at a brake pad replacement procedure for a Audi CQ, brakes should be very simliar in design (sliding caliper) to the Jetta 3. If anything, look over this procedure:

Audi brake pad replacement

and use it as a guide.

Very easy to do...Just be sure not to strip out the allen head bolts that hold the caliper on. Clean all of the crap out of the allen head first, then stick the allen wrench in there. Otherwise you will strip them. I have a 90 Wolfsburg Jetta and I just did front rotors and pads for about $40...

Luis'

I just recently did the front brakes on my Mk2 1988 Golf GT.
Do not know if the Mk3 Jetta brakes are the same, but I have the factory "Bentley" repair manual and would be happy to scan and e-mail or copy and fax over to you the pages relating to brakes. I work in an international business environment so cost and convenience is no problem.

E-mail me if you want to take me up on it:

Go to the "forums" section of http://www.vwvortex.com and you'll see Jetta forums where you can get advice from other owners.

I did the front pads on a friend's A3 a while ago, and it was mind-numbingly simple. I think the only difference between it and my A2 is that the A3 has two standard bolts, versus my A2's two allen bolts.

Either way, I'm sad to say that it isn't more than a one-beer job.

BB.
