I might be one of the bad guys.... I always park comfortably far away and leave some open spots, but if there's another nice car out there I tend to park next to it.
I know I'm not going to hit their car, and I have some confidence that they won't hit mine. We're both protected on at least one side now!
Safety in numbers?
My biggest concern parking out in the middle of nowhere is someone just plowing right into my car full speed.

Back in Nov 2014, I dropped my 84 off at the detail shop and some lady decided to perform an illegal U-turn on a single lane road, on a hill in the middle of a curve and couldn't make it so... She backed right in the rear corner panel. Luckily, the shop had video cameras and captured the entire incident. It was a good excuse to repaint the entire car.
