The only lock out for reverse is the linkage inside the transmission. There is no external gate/lock out.

I would check all of the external linkage first. Especially the coupler between the long link and the external linkage on the trans.

The second point is the cross link on the top of the trans. The special ball studs come loose and/or wear out their rubber dampeners.
