Question High Beams

I am having a problem with my 1984 944. Just bought it and it failed inspection because of no high beam on drivers side. Replaced bulb and low beams work but still no high beam. Any suggestions?

1. Fuses. Check Fuses 1 and 3 (I believe high beam left is #3.) Your car uses four 8 amp fuses, one for each headlamp filament.

2. Wiring harness. The wires to the pop-up headlights can break due to flexing over the years.

Welcome to Rennlist and congratualations on your new toy!

Is there power to both sides of each fuse (1,2,3,4)? No: problem in fuse box. Yes, broken wire in wiring harness to lights. They usually break in the flexible portion that lead to the headlight bucket, due to flexing during raising/lowering of the headlight.

There is power to all the fuses. Poked hole with tester pretty close to where wire disappears into car and no voltage there. Thinking it is really hard to get to. Ran a wire from high beam wire of working light to high beam wire of non-working light. Now both work. Easy solution. Just wondering if there is a reason that that is a bad idea.

Yes, it isn't the greatest idea as you are overloading the current draw on the one good light wiring. You may melt that wire .... sort of surprised you didn't blow the fuse, it must be an over amp fuse.

You probably should track this problem down right or do a little rewiring job by installing a relay and new wires. And don't go putting in bulbs that have an overwatted high beam, like 100 watts each until you fix correctly. If you do you will be smelling burning plastic for sure.
