Good Mechanic in Raleigh? Advice on car? Etc., etc...
Ok for those of you who live in Raleigh, who is a good Porsche mechanic. I can't really afford a whole lot, as the mechanic down the road is only $50/hour. I'm guessing Raleigh is going to be more like 70-75 an hour.
I'm getting my student loan in, and I'd really like to get my car fixed - completely.
I may do the work myself, if my friend parents will let me leave the car in their garage, we can work on it on the weekends and what not.
I'm still trying to figure out what I should do. Maybe someone has some advice...
It's one of two possible things (I think):
1) Spun bearing
2) Oil pump
I've been told more then once that it isn't the oil pump because these things are bullet proof.
So if it's the spun bearing, would it be cheaper to get say a 968 engine and have a nice upgrade along the way, selling the 2.7L engine for parts or just fix the 2.7L engine? If I gotta yank the engine out anyway...
I know my engine shares the block I think with the 3.0L, so maybe I could just by the rest of the 968 parts and piece it together?
For you brake-specialists who are about to say "don't upgrade the engine with those dinky NA brakes" -- I already have 968 front caplipers waiting to bolt on to my 944. Just gotta get some drilled zimmerman rotors (and of course I want to fix the car first).

It depends on how bad you spun the bearing. If it just scuffed a bit, and didn't seize, you might be able to just cut the crank to 1st undersize and put in new bearings. I'd take it apart and determine just how bad it is before getting crazy with it.
