Default OT: Suggestions for VW Passat problem

I was talking to a friend at work about a problem he is having with his 97 VW Passat. I didn't know what to tell him so I thought maybe someone here would have some suggestions. Here are the details:

1997 VW Passat GLS - VR6
Loss of dash power when it gets cold (we had our first freeze last night)
The odometer doesn't clock the miles when the power is off so I think it would have to be computer related (digital odometer). Sometimes it will power back on while driving and pick up right where it left off but mostly will stay off. Also, when first cranking the motor over the dash powers on and lights up but once you let the key go it shuts off.

Thanks for any help.

Check whether there's a relay that might be supplying DC power to the dash. It may be operating marginally in the cold.

I was kinda thinking it might be relay related since it was a power supply problem. Anyone know how the digital odometer keeps track of the mileage? It doesn't tick the miles when the power is out either.

Thanks for the tip.
