Clearly it is K&N filter you have; good for 5-10 hp right there. Also, do you have the optional 16 valve insignia on your car? Did he? They may be acting as stickers, giving you another 5-10 hp boost.

In theory, the turbo gearing in your car should have cost you about 0.25 seconds (about 2 car lengths) in a 60-85 mph third gear pull (5.25 s versus 5.0 s), assuming 944 S2s with identical torque curves and test weight. It would definitely seem that you have more power and/or less weight.

It was more like 50-85. Started next to him, ended up with my back bumper about at his side mirrors. I doubt it was less weight--i imagine mine had to be 100+ pounds heavier with the rollbar and everything else. Weird.

I have heard the the way the cams are set and dialed-in makes a difference in power. Not sure how true this is, but I do know that setting the cams is not for the faint of heart nor those without the special tools & dials.

Further to Michael's comment, the cam sprocket on the S2 is adjustable, though I think this only affects the location of the TA/HP peak along the RPM range rather than increasing or decreasing the available power.

Cheers,
