Default Need info on steering pump

Got a bad power steering pump...the replacement looks fairly simple but would like to know if there's any thing special I need to look out for when I do it. Also, do I need to bleed the replaced pump and if so , how?

Thanks!

when you refill the system, be sure to use ATF unless you want a lot of leaks. you may or may not need to replace all the little copper crush washers too. travis (rennbay.com) sells reseal kits for the pump, IIRC they are $20, and are a pretty simple fix.

Michael- is there a good way to determine which hose is leaking without getting a face full of fluid??? I also need to replace my PS pump (someday) but manual steering for now..

..as well as the u-joints on the steering column- (I'm noticing a bit of play) has anyone done THAT repair??

hmmm, that depends on your leak chris. i'd guess that if you washed the whole system down very well, then refilled the tank and rack, reconnected the belt, turned the car on, and had patti turn the wheel back and forth, you'd find it in no time. if it's a hose it should be a pretty simple fix. the hard lines are a ***** to get off, but it was worth it to go to the manual rack i'm sure someone who's done the manual rack conversion will have their old u-joints you can have. iirc, they seem to hold up pretty well... what have you been doing to that thing!?

Edit: i really should have re-read that before i posted... it'd be kinda hard to put the belt back on with the car running!

Thanks for the tips Micheal...so I guess the system bleeds itself once replaced?

when you replace it, you'll need to turn the wheel lock to lock about 3 times, and the system should bleed itself. pretty simple (about the only thing on the car that is)!
