I was only able to do a little this weekend as I need to get some Loktite and a lot more cleaner.

Installed new pilot bearing into crank and set on block with new main bearings.

Loctite 574 arrive so I could get the upper and lower crankcase together and did more cleaning with the ultrasonic. As per the shop manual I temporarily mounted the oil pump to align the pieces.

I always thought this was black.

Does well on pistons.

Making progress. Engine is over 1/2 way done as I have moved on to the head where I just finished replacing the stem seals. I just need to address a broken bolt from one of the water pipes then it can go on the car.

I'm hoping by next weekend to be able to bring the car into the garage to start putting things back together but it might be two more weeks.

Well after a long while of not being able to work on it I'm back at it. Here is a pic of the engine so far. I'm planning on bringing the car into the garage in the next couple of weeks for install.

Engine is in! I'm still connecting everything and only have a few pieces left. I decided to leave out the AC compressor for now and have done the AC delete (the one suggested on 944spec) as although the old compressor spins it is so caked in gunk I just didn't have the ambition to bother with it for now.

However apparently my clutch master cylinder is shot and I have no pedal resistance. I already had a new slave part in waiting so I'll have to order up a new master and pipe...joy. I'll try bleeding it to see if I can get something back as the fluid was nearly all gone and likely got a ton of air on the pipe.

It's alive!
I do need to take the belt cover back off because when cold it make a lot of knocking noice from right behind it. Either I didn't tightening the idler pulley down enough or the balance shaft belt is too loose. The noise stops after about 2-3 minutes.

Worked out the knocking. The balance belt was the issue. It jumped teeth too and I realized that there were two position of the tensioner that would give you the proper setting. I unfortunately set it the wrong way (twice) causing it to loosen. Once I realized my issue it cured the problem and runs nice and steady.

The only thing engine wise left now is at some point I will send the injectors out to get cleaned. It seems to miss here and there and that's likely all from a bad flow/spray from these old injectors.

Congrats! It's a great feeling when you first start up an engine that you rebuilt. That's 90% of the job.

Now, the other 90% of the job will be working out all of the kinks!
