Default Weird Rear End Problem

Hello all,

My 944 Turbo S has a weird problem. I was driving home when I heard a really strange noise coming from the rear. I pulled over and checked to see if I had anything caught underneath the car. As I was pulling it into the garage, the rear end locked. After going backwards a bit, it freed up again and I managed to get it into the garage.

I jacked the car up and when I turn the wheel by hand, it works fine for a rotation or two. Then it suddenly locks with a thunk. If I turn it backwards a bit, it will unlock and continue to rotate fine until it happens again.

Any idea what the problem is?

My first guess would be your parking brake. Does it happen on both sides or just one?

I was going to say, last time I complained about something like that, I was forced to undergo a colonoscopy.

When I got my 944, just recently, I thought the parking brake went horizontal like in a Japanese car. I was driving with it partially on for days before I realized it went all of the way to the floor.

It's even worse in my car. The horizontal bar for the roll cage just barely clears the parking brake, so I don't even notice that it is engaged.

Living in Florida, the only time I use it is when my garage door refuses to close. I set it so the car didn't roll down the driveway. I must have driven it all the way to the grocery store and back with it on.
