Default Clutch slave cylinder play

Is there supposed to be play in the clutch part that connects to the pedal? Also would broken shift linkage pieces sound like a knock when the car is on?

The clutch master cylinder is connected to the firewall, behind the clutch pedal. This pushes hydraulic (brake) fluid to the clutch slave cylinder which is on the bell housing under the car. Where is there play on your car?

Broken shift linkage pieces would prevent you from shifting into gear. If you're hearing a knock, where is it coming from? It might be anything from a broken exhaust hanger to an engine that's about to explode...

The shifter rattle could just be worn parts. Is it right near the lever in the cabin? Cause that linkage wallows out and chatters.
