Default Question re: cast vs. forged alloys wheels

What is the difference? I know some Porsche wheels are cast and some are forged. Isn't forged harder and more expensive?

I know that if you are running on a steel wheel and hit a big bump or pothole, it will bend and become untrue. With a cast alloy wheel, is it possible? I am guessing that a cast alloy wheel will crack and not bend.

Cast is prolly the "better street rim because they are hevier and also usually made to take more beating"

Forged is "lighter more expensive and better"

Hmm. I had the impression that cast was the weaker one than forged.

True forged is stronger...
But You must remember most Forged rim's are not ment for street use and will be weaker when used in this enviroment.

Hmmm... Somebody better tell Fikse and Porsche that thier wheels are not good on the street.

Forged wheels will be stronger than cast, and instead of breaking they tend to bend. Here is a picture of a very expensive Compomtive three piece cast wheel. A forged wheel would never do this. BTW This was at an autocross, and these wheels were just used at the track not to long before this happened to the left front. I shuuder to think what would have happened at 100+ MPH if this thing had gone out.

broken wheel

Forged rims a much stronger. Period. The forging process generates better and more unifom material properties.

There are two major drawbacks however. Cost & Shapes. Forged wheels are more costly and it is often harder to make them in new and fresh shapes. Most auto makers stick with cast since cost and appearance are big factors.

Forged wheels are stronger for the same shape and dimensions. What this means is that they can be made thinner for less weight. Often times forged wheels will be stronger and weigh less.

As stated above, forged is stronger for the same size, lighter due to material strength, and bend instead of crack. If you want a testament to this, I will try to get some pics of the ALCOAs on my Jeep. Thet are forged and I do things with them that steel wheels would buckle under and cast would crack.

BTW, what wheels besides Fuchs are forged from Porsche? My Phone Dials and Boxster wheels (like esanmiguel's) are pressure cast, right? Any other forged ones?

There are some Design 90 wheels that are forged. I think that's the style. IIRC they came on the Turbo S.
I could be mistaken however.

Yeah the D 90's on the Turbo S were Forged (not the standard D90's), as were the 'Flat Dish' style 928 wheels that were optionable for 944's.

I'm sure there are more, but none I can currently think of.

Forged wheels are actually heavier (if made in the same dimensions as a cast wheel), but the added strength makes using less material possible.

The Turbo S wheels you are referring to are called Club Sport wheels, and do not look like D90s.

However, I believe they also made forged D90s in 16 by 8/9 that came on some models, including TS.

Similar look. I personaly find the small lip on the D90's alittle more disirable.
