Default Motor Needed for Our 4/85 944

I guess the motor in the car I bought for my son is toast. Tried the balance shaft delete thing after the bearing basically exploded in the balance shaft housing. No oil pressure at all. Bad rod or who knows. Anyway, the best 16 year old birthday present has turned into a total disaster for me as a dad, and my son isn't driving to school in his cool car the way i had hoped...and promised him. I need a motor. Anyone have one or have advice as to where to find a solid one? Thanks

You're in TX right? There's a 84 with a good (from what I can tell) motor here in a Houston junkyard. If you want a hand locally, drop me a line. If the motor needs parts there is a 85.1 about 100 yards away but is rough, but the head is intact.

I am in San Antonio. I would gladly come to Houston. Is the 84 fairly clean/well taken care of? Or the other one? My block is bad, but all the components are in good working order. Being that mine is an 85/2, is there any drawback in going backwards in year or any difficulty with compatibility? Any idea how much they are? Thank you, sausagehacker!

The early/late discrepancies are very minor, you should be able to figure them out. The car was actually very clean, it is an auto trans sunroof delete. There's no way to know about the condition of the motor except that I remember the timing belt was intact. The engine looked reasonably well looked after...there was gasket maker on some parts so shortcuts were probably taken in the final days but overall it was better than average for 944s I've seen in the junkyards.

It's in this yard:

Their inventory site sucks, it isn't up to date so don't trust it. They are 20 minutes away from me.

If you know anyone in the Denver, CO area, there is a guy in Boulder who has a working NA motor he is dying to get rid of to clean the garage out.
