Tifo,

Yeah, that's one of the pictures. I think you can find that on 924.org as well. Thanks.

Billy,

I am pretty sure it is jacked up somewhat. It also looks likeit has tarmac tires on which maybe makes it look lower or something, I don't know. Also the fact that it's sitting in tall grass doesn't help represent how high up it is sitting. Look at how the grass covers the tire all the way up to the wheel.

Here, these guys prepped and raced their 944s2 in a pro-rally event. They may have a few tips........

Don't go with coilovers. They will NOT take the punishment of offroad racing. A lot of people make that mistake.

Also, put a lot of money into that roll cage. Gussets on crosses, welded in junction boxes on all major contact points, follow the A pillar really well, reinforce the suspension mounting points... also you will have to do something about the A arms. You would want something in steel with removable ball joints.

It isn't gonna be cheap.

So what are the suspension units on WRC cars that look an awful lot like coilover shock/struts?

And yes, it ain't going to be cheap.

I think they look a lot like coil-overs because they are.

But, to expand upon what he probably means, he is talking about reliability issues. Most people don't have an entire team of mechanics and factory backing (and $$) to keep rebuilding suspensions at every service point along the stage rally.

Oh sure, I'm with you on that one. That's going to be a problem no matter what you chose though. I think I'd still save up the dough to get a really nice rebuildable set of shocks/struts for all four corners just for the adjustablity. Well, if I was wealthy I would...

Heck, regardless of suspension, those trees along the side of the road aren't soft if you know what I mean.

I hear ya. I can't remember ever finishing an event without the need to perform major bodywork/repair.

I know you've mention it before, but when and what did you race. I knew a couple folks when I lived in Atlanta who worked with Bruce Newey.

Late 80's and early 90's sporatically. I raced (when I drove and didn't co-drive) in Production class with a Dodge GLHS, then when it became too old for production I raced in Group 2. I co-drove in a few different cars for different drivers.

Hmmm, everytime I start thinking about something, someone else alway posts it. It's actually pretty convenient, lol. Yeah, I was thinking it would be fun to buy a not so pretty 924 and ralley it. Maybe go bigger and better as time goes by. I was thinking maybe a stroked, turboed VW motor or something?

I guess mostly because it is RWD. Not like there aren't a few old RX-7s rallying though. Also because most regular folks wouldn't think to rally a Porsche I guess, even though there's a 911 in Group 2 right now. Hmm and come to think of it, that's RWD too, right?

WOW, thanks for all the info guys.

About not going coil-over. I currently drive a 4Runner and some buddies I know do alot of BAJA in california and texas and they all have coil-overs on their rigs. They hold up great!!! especially when you go with a 5-point suspension and rock crawl the rig...just my 2 cents
