Default hesitation in drive

My 1987 automatic 944 idles and revs fine in neutral but has been hesitating a lot lately when in drive, particular during the first 5-10 minutes that it is running. If I shift to neutral and rev the engine, the tachometer levels out and the engine sounds ok. Sometimes I have to do this while coasting on the street...an obvious hazard. Any ideas as to what might be the culprit?

THANKS

Start with fluid level. Or a fluid change? when was the last time it was changed? Low fluid level in an auto will create havoc. Revving the motor while in neutral will put oil into the system as it is not needed to change gears this is true to any auto tranny. .. Just a thought but that is where I would start. Tranny service..
