Question Why are most 968s either Tips or Cabs?

Looking through a lot of ads for 968s, it seems almost all of them are Tips or Cabs. Were they really that popular?

Any idea if the Cab was as stiff as the coupe?

I believe 50% were Cabs and I know alot of Cab's were Tips.

Why? Cause a 968 Cab Tip was the boulevard cruiser many People buy Porsche's for.

Marketing. Remember when the 968s were around, there simply wasn't much demand for them, as good as they were. Their "competition" was beating them with cheaper cars. So, to make them just a little bit more special, Porsche put out more cabs and tips to differentiate them from their competition and, sadly, cater to the "plusher" market rather than the "sportscar" market.

I'm sure the cabs are not as stiff as the coupes, but as cabs go, I hear they're pretty solid.

I have a Tip Cab - pretty damn stiff, breaks your neck on NYC potholes

The cab has substantial re-inforcement so the twist stiffness is good. That accounts for an extra couple of 100 lbs, that's why the Cab is slower 0-60.

Maybe you see more on the market, cuz the guys with manual coupes aren't crazy enough to give up such a sweet ride.

I noticed the same thing, when I was looking for a 968, so I got a 951.

My thoughts echo AG's. There were just as many cabs as coupes, but most people who own coupes keep them and the cab owners sell them. A cab resells for more than a coupe and that may have something to do with it with the economy where it is. As for stiffness, a coupe will always be stiffer, if not the cab will be really heavy to compensate for no upper bracing.

It's also not so much that there are more cabs/tips, it's just that there are more of them for sale due to higher turnover, as it seems to me the coupe/6speed owners tend to hold on to them longer, or use them more as a daily driver than a sunny day pleasure vehicle.

Would a roll-bar improve the stiffness of a cab?

Hmm, pretty much the opposite in the UK - I'd say 80% coupes and 80% manual transmission. Mine's a keeper

cab's are stifff.... same as 944s2 cab and I let anyone who thinks there not drive one... (but not mine unless I know you really well because I am stingy...)... (plus the cab's got beter 60-0 , skidpad, slalom..... (slower 1/4mile) ......... This is according to a equally prepard competer and was done by magazines that may or maynot be biased...

Sounds like they're close enough that it shouldn't be a deciding factor. I think my next car will be either a 944S2 cab or 968 cab (stick in either case). I want to do some sort of project car, and just can't see dumping that kind of cash into a n/a (which could benefit from all the suspension, brake and interior work I want to do, but the engine's very limited).

What do you mean you can't see dumping that kind of cash into a n/a? (Joe asks as he looks up from his 944 N/A engine swap project... )

Of the 234 cab owners who replied to a survey on 968.net, less than 20% had a tip trans.
