Question Computer Assisted Shift Indicator System

Does anybody pay attention to the light that comes on to indicate that it's time to shift gears? My light seems to be on half the time.

Maybe if I shifted when it indicated that it's time to, my fuel efficiency would be better, but it wouldn't be much fun to drive.

I find that the system has some issues, maybe emotional... who knows :P
Anyways I hardly ever used it and I recently replaced my inst. cluster to one without it.

My light seems to be able to sense my mood. Sometimes the light will come on when it revs really high, and will actually chirp the tires when I shift when the light comes on.

i have the light. if you drive lightly, it will come on, even before you think you should shift. this will give you very poor acceleration in trade off for fuel economy. i drive a little harder, the light doesnt get to come on... although i do a lot of highway driving as well, keeps my mpg around 23-26. i thought it was annoying at first, but i got used to it. if i put a tach without casis in my car it screws up other guages, due to grounding issues.

the casis light and others like it can be annoying. at least the light in the 944 is much smaller and dimmer than the light in my parent's old jetta . . .a big yellow arrow in the top center of the instrument pod, at least twice as big as the 944's . . .even the passengers would notice that one-"Why is your car telling you that you're going forward?" lol

erau-944's right, though- if you're driving lightly, it'll come on more and stay on longer than if you're driving hard.

The way I understand it, when you drive lightly it keeps you at peak mpg. but when you flog it it I think that it shows you the end of the powerband and gets you into the next gear at the optimum rpm.

I was going to ask if anyones here still works

Don't recall seeing them in others. I snipped the wire on mine because it was on all the time.

I say snip the wire regardless.

Like I said, the tach on the isnt. cluster that I replaced had it and AFAIK it worked but, it was beginning to annoy me.
I'd recommend taking out the bulb instead of snipping the wire, that way if you ever miss it you can have it back.
