does the sway bar need to be removed to slip out the steeping rack?

I think you will want to remove the sway bar.

this is my second go round with removing a rack but it has been years. I recall saying to myself though I will NEVER replace a rack again.
So I go the rack off finally and now putting installing the replacement. Same frustration point though. The spline from the new used rack won't "slip" on the universal joint as said in these instructions. What makes things worse is that the steering wheel is moving and the rack steering is moving so I can never get it aligned long enough to leverage the splines together to tap in on. and the spines themselves are slightly rounded enough that it is not catching in sync to one another. I think I have to drop the rack again long enough to tap the splines together. PIA!!

just wrapping up this one...I did take the rack back out and used a triangular hand file to file each groove in the spline until it was clean. I also used a dremel and wire brush wheel to clean all the gunk out of it. I also used the dremel on the steering spline receptacle. I re-installed and it caught just enough for me to tap it the rest of the way. Everything else went back ok and works good. No leaks, not yet anyways.
