Exclamation Oil Pressure light.... Help!

Here is the scenario, last night coming home from work, I stopped at a store to pick up a couple things. Said store is about 2 miles away from my home. I left the store, started up my 944 and the oil pressure light as well as the big red exclamation light were on. Motor sounded fine, and my oil bar gauge was still reading about 4 - 5. So I drove home, no issues.
My questions.....
  1. I just had the gauge cluster apart to fix lighting and spedo gear, could I have screwed up somthing in there? Aprox 50 miles on the fixed cluster
  2. is there some way to test the oil pressure sending unit?
  3. could I have no oil pressure and the oil bar gauge still read normal?

Thanks for any imput.

I'd order a new sending unit (it does both the gauge and the light) ASAP and not drive the car until it was installed. Hopefully it's just a bad sender, but it would be a shame to destroy the engine because you "thought" it would be OK...

Van is the sender actually two senders in one? One terminal is variable resistence for the analog gauge and the other terminal is for the light?

Yes, it would be wise to check with a mechanical gauge under the hood before running it.

Yes, two independent sendors in one housing. I tore mine apart a few years ago and examined it for the hell of it. I read that when the gauge fails it goes full swing one way or the other.

make sure to label your connectors. They can be mixed up on the sender terminals!
