Default FYI - keep a spare DME/FP Relay

I've heard it said a thousand times - keep a spare DME/Fuel Pump relay in your 944. I never worried about it because it always happened to other people. Of course, today that changed. I just moved about 50 miles from my work, and today about 1/2 way home my car completely died on the highway. I was cruising in fifth and all of a sudden it was like no gas. The RPMs started dropping. I coasted to the shoulder and the car was dead. It would turn over vigorously, but no firing. The tach would jiggle at about 50-100 RPM. Fortunately, I have a friend with two 944's, he happened to have some spares and lent me one. I did about 2 miles of walking in 80 degree sun (I'm not exactly a fitness buff) and spent roughly 5.5 hours of my evening driving or waiting on a ride.

The moral of the story - carry the spare relay. It can happen to YOU!

Thanks for listening,

Dale.

...and another thing - can anybody suggest the cheapest place to get a new relay? I've got to buy two now (a spare for me, and a gift to my friend).

TIA!

You can also just jumper the pins the relay connects to get home. Perhaps a better solution compared to a $25 part in the glovebox you might never need.

Default I carry one in each car

From Paragon: DME/Fuel Pump Relay

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

item# 993.615.227.00 price: $19.90

Many fuel delivery problems can be traced to a faulty DME/Fuel Pump relay. At our price it just doesn't make sense not to keep a spare in your glove box. Fits all 924S, 944, 944S, 944S2, 944 Turbo and 968.
