Default www.imaca.org for the R12 certification?

Saw the link on a post earlier tonight and I'm interested in it and read up on it online at the website. I have a few questions maybe some of you guys can help me out with. How much does the recovery system cost? I wouldn't be doing anything major like at shops just my own and maybe friends cars. I want to do it as safe as possible without hurting the environment and I also don't need the EPA knocking on my door. I couldn't find how long it is good for the certification that is for? Since I want to fix my 951 AC system myself and save few bucks: I am interested in it since I'm going into the automobile field.

A good AC machine will cost anywhere from 800 to 1500 dollars and must be registered with the EPA (technically). Certification never expires, if memory serves me. I am too lazy to walk down the hall and check. Test takes less than 15 mins and the answers are in the book. Pick one up at your local community college auto dept. they are free.

Matt do you know where I can look online at the AC machine? I want just something for myself doesn't need to be state of the art but safe for the environment. They have all the information that is on the test in they study guide. Even if I don't do it yet and just get the certification done would be good since I would be going into the automotive field. Thanks for your information Matt you been a help.

You can actually find them on Ebay pretty cheap or just go around to area shops and ask if they have one they want to sell you. If you find one with a broken vaccuum pump that can be fixed pretty cheap...at one point I had about a dozen or so. I dont have any right now, as I try not to do that work anymore. It is not much fun in the garage. You can set up a good AC shop at your house for very little money. I used to make the hoses and assemblies as well. I might be able to find you a machine if you are not opposed to having it shipped.

Took the test and passed it. So now maybe in the future I will get around to the AC system and fix it. Matt what are all the items needed to track and fix the problem on the AC system. You been a lot of help and thanks again I will keep you in mind for the AC recovery machine and I'm open to shipping but I'm not able to do much now as I don't have the fund to. Hopefully NAPA will hire me tomorrow. Good Night

Sebastian, you don't need an a/c recharge machine. At this point all you will need is vacuum pump and gauges if the system is already empty.

The cert. is for life. It also covers you for any future refrigerants that may be regulated. I've read that eventually R134 will require certification to buy

You could just buy gauges and a vaccuum pump for about 400 bucks or get a used machine for about 800. And you would actually be able to work on it more than the one time you charge it. Further, he asked how much a recovery system cost.

951 Tom says: "The cert. is for life. It also covers you for any future refrigerants that may be regulated. I've read that eventually R134 will require certification to buy"

Now, dosen't that tell you something? Follow the MONEY. I believe this R-12 hooey, is all about MONEY, nothing more.

How about used gauges and a pump for less then a $100. I think he might be better off using the additional $700 he'd save on the used machine to pay for all the times he's going to need to have the system evacuated.

There are always multiple ways to come to a solution BUT he asked about a "recovery" system not a way to recharge the AC. I have also seen used AC machines go much lower than 800 bucks, even a few at 250 dollars. Guess it depends on how you want to arrive at the solution.

I can understand that, I just tried to answer the inital question about a recovery system. And you are right, you get get the stuff used for about that much. Of course, without real knowledge it doesnt mean much of anything. What are the pressures supposed to be for instance? What is too high? too low? Since you sound knowledgable I am sure you know what I mean.
