Default 944 NA: Transmission tunnel safe to drive short screws?

I am wondering about the need to investigate what is behind the borders of the transmission tunnel in a base 944.

Can I mount accessories with 1/2" - 3/4" wood screws without causing problems?

Considering putting in an auxiliary power socket into the ashtray. Am I safe to dremel a 1.5" hole there?

There are brake lines on one side you want to avoid. Also what about self-tapping sheet metal screws? Leave the wood screws for the around the house stuff.
