Drifting
Balance is what is needed. If she is complaining, that's all there is to it, she's just making herself heard. I too agree that there are worse things we could do for fun/relaxation. I try to balance my "car time" with the time I spend with the family, lately I'm spending WAY too much time in the garage, but the clutch is down and its my daily steed. While my job is not the strain that yours certainly is (couldn't do it myself, but my brother-in-law does) I'd rather decompress with the car as well. Take her out, make her feel like the special lady she is, try not to be too harsh about the smoking, maybe she's looking at it as "her vice" since she feel you spend too much time/money on the car; "your vice". Maybe the smoking will go away as you shift your attention toward her.
PS Don't let my wife see this post, it will let her know that I know I spend too much time/money on "my vice".

Q: How do you stop your girlfriend from smoking?
A: Slow down.
This crazy old guy at the gas station told me that one the other day. I thought it might pertain to this in some obscure way.

You may have noticed my signature - Rennlist Widow - even though we aren't married.
It helps if you can try to involve her in your car. Have her help you do a little project (I painted lug nuts). Have her hand you tools or something. Maybe it will help give her a sense of pride in what you do and she still gets to spend time with you.
But being a silly romantic girl that I am, I know she probably still wants time alone with you that you aren't thinking about what you should be doing with the car instead.
Do yourself a favor and give her that time. She won't be nearly as apt to jump on you about the time you spend on your car.

Patti- that is good advise. I let my wife help me all the time with the cars. So much that she has claimed my 951 for DE's when it is done. It makes the time working on the car go by more quickly, we get to spend time together, and when something needs to be replaced she can see it and therefore, understands that need to spend the money.
Then there are some nights where I just dont screw with the car even though I need to. Must work on it tonight though.

im sure she was just making herself heard, and i told her ill try to get a normal weekend off so we can spend some time together. Oh yea and she was knocking this site..."you go on the same damn site looking to see whats new over and over again". so no more rennlist while shes here..haha

I took the police dept exam in '95, wound doing something else before I got called up.
I was thinking that since you lived on LI, you might have one of those cushy Nassau/Suffolk county police jobs... I remember a big stink a few years ago about how they get paid more than the guys in the city.

Porsche vs. Woman
The car has never called you a selfish bastard.
Why a Porsche is better then a woman:
Costs less to maintain, always puts out, and a breakdown is always
easier then a breakup.
(Ofcourse this dosen't apply to any gift's from God on this site.. after all it is women that make the world turn )

Ah, the lovely Junction! It was bad there when I went to PS152, back in '76, and it was bad there when I went to Brooklyn College in '86!
At least the park is better now...it was a war zone 20 years ago!
I lived on E17th between Ave I and the LIRR tracks...still OK, if you are religious, if you know what I mean!
