Does two things:

One: It gives a crisp clean signal to the coil resulting in a better spark.


Two: It isolates the DME from any high voltage feed back from the coil.


Guess there is a third component here; a real PITA to diagnose.

Might be worth changing this.......just because, eh? I have heard they are cheap and looks easy enough to swap out.

I sometimes get what feels like a bad spark and I have new wires, cap, dis, etc, etc. Couldn't hurt to try replacing this part.

Actually the part under the intake on the 87-88 16V S cars is called an "auxiliary air egulator valve" and is different from the NA and turbo models.
