Question Noisy valves, what causes it and what to do?

88 na, the car drives nice and everything feels fine, but I do hear some clatter from the valves, particularly when it's hot. The miles are high, she has 190,000.

What causes the valves to make noise and what's involved in 'fixing' it?

I suggest 20W50; No leaking out the bottom on mine (cross fingers).

I'm already running 20/50. I check the level regularly and it's good, don't seem to leak or burn much, if any.

Probably bad lifters. Replacing them will fix it.

what kind of clacking? only when you open the hood and look under, or while driving? the injectors are pretty noisy, but if you can hear it from inside then its probably valves. also, when the engine is over 2500 rpm, in or out of gear, and the throttle is closed, the injectors do not open, if its them the sound should temporarily stop until the car falls below 2500 rpm.

At idle I can hear it under the hood, so maybe that's the injectors. But when I'm driving it I can hear it, usually when the rpm's are low, especially if I shift up a bit earlier than I should (hate to admit it, but it happens ;-)). That must be the lifters.

How big a job is that for someone without much mechanical experience? How expensive to have it done in a shop?

PITA for low knoweleged folk, not imposible tho, a good book will help greatly! BEefore you tearinto that, make sure the metal pipe at the back of the cam housing isn't vibrating. It's the little pipe maybe 1/4" with a light blue rubber cap on the top. It goes to the exhaust. There was a guy on here that had that vibrating, he took it to a good mechanic, was told he needed new lifters. We saw it at the 944Fest and aved him a few hundred bucks! Worth a try man.
