Check your flywheel sensors first. The tend to get old and brittle and short out. Your car sounds like its doing exactly what my 944 was when the sensors went bad.
If its not that, then my guess is an electrical short somewhere else, and then the DME.

You can test them with an ohm meter. Unplug each of them and measure resistance at the sensor side between the center pin and the rear most pin. You should see about 1000 ohms plus or minus a bit.
You can also do this at the DME plug. Unplug it from the DME box and measure between pins 8 and 27 for the speed sensor and 25 and 26 for the reference sensor. You might wiggle the wires at the bellhousing to check for breakages.
